“Litany is an immersive multi video projection installation by video artist Erin Elyse Burns that explores mental imagery inspired by composer John Cage’s 1980 vocal work entitled “Litany for the Whale.” The Cage piece has a call and response structure reminiscent of religious chants written for two voices. The video installation is designed to complement the sound through a series of vignettes, which build upon each other. The imagery draws on winter in the Northwest, analogies of the mind during meditation and visual pairings; steam, fog, smoke; whispers, screams; light and line. I have recorded one of the two voices at the Richmond Parish Church in London. This recording is embedded in the video and on Wednesday, April 3rd and at the closing reception on Friday, April 5th, Jeremiah will perform the second voice live with the recorded version within the video installation to an intimate audience. We will offer two public performances each date with capacity at approximately 30 people each performance. Tickets are available free (please donate if you can!) from Brown Paper Tickets.

This Christmas season I will be singing with a couple of choral groups in West London. The first of these concerts will be a program of Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols”, Heinrich Schütz’s “Christmas Story”, and carols sung with the audience. This beautiful music will be heard in Chiswick’s own St. Michael and All Angels Church.
The Fulham and Hammersmith Choral Society is directed by Christopher Wray. Soloists for the evening are Felicity Davies and Hermione Ruck Keene. Andrew Wells will play the organ, and Anneke Hodnett joins on the harp. Tickets are £12 in advance and £14 at the door. £5 for those under 16.

This Sunday night, September 30, 2012, The Box Is Empty can be heard on Kinetics Radio. KR will be broadcasting TBIE’s June 29 performance of Nat Evans’s Hear No Noise, with Maria Mannisto Soprano and yours truly conducting. Word on the street is we will be in the first hour of the program, so tune in between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. pacific. Check out video of the performance here. You can read a review of Nat’s piece and our performance here.

The Box Is Empty is pleased to bring you a third concert of premiers and new works. “Live at the Century Ballroom” will include works by Bang on a Can founder Michael Gordon, the Dutch multi-media composer-director Michel Van Der Aa, and American up-and-comers Scott Gendel, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Seattle’s own Nat Evans.
This concert experience will be a different one. Century Ballroom will be serving drinks (so don’t forget your ID!), and we are going to give the music a little bit of breathing room. There will be time between works to chat, meet the musicians, grab a drink, and relax. So, come for a night with friends, and come to hear a night of wonderful new music!
